The word “Sexual harassment” is such a term nowadays that any woman, in any country, can relate to. Whether it is taking a bus transport, or walking down the streets alone, there is always a very big possibility for women out there to get sexually harassed.
Not only do women get sexually harassed nowadays even men face similar experiences. The worst part is that men and women of all ages get targeted. It starts out by calling out names or instructing to smile. And in the end, gets more aggressive by touching private or inappropriate body parts. Let’s look at some of the statistics on sexually harassment in the USA
Overall rapes in the US
In the USA, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men get raped. About 91% of rape or sexual harassment victims are female and 9% are male. These are mostly done by partners who are intimate as reported by 51.1% female victims. 52.4% of men claim getting raped by people they know, 15.1% from strangers. Around 8% of rapes happen when the victim stays at work.
Child Sexual Harassment
Children who get exposed to this sort of harassment are more likely to suffer from post-traumatic symptoms, such as nightmares, depression, or serious harmful diseases. In the US, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys usually get sexually harassed before they grow 18. And undoubtedly, 96% of the perpetrators are male and 76.8% are adults. Greater than one-third of females, who report on getting sexually abused before 18, again become victims as adults.
Campus Sexual Harassment
Harassment also largely occurs inside school, college, or university premises. About two-thirds of college students have reported on an experience of sexual harassment. According to a study in 2002, in a university, 63.3% of the students have admitted to have committed rapes and even repeated them. 20 to 25% of women, followed by 15% of men in colleges are reported to be victims of sexually harassment.
Impact and Cost of Sexual Harassment
In the United States rape costs higher more than any other crime. A rape victim’s lifetime cost is about $123 million. After that, assault -$93 million, murder -$71 million and driving while drunk and fatalities- $61 million.
Crime Reports
Sexual Harassments and rapes are the less reported crimes in the US. The police remain unaware of about 63% of the rapes occurred. According to various researches, about 88% of the sexual harassments or rapes on children are never reported. Greater than 90% of the sexual assaults taken place in college or university campuses don't get reported to the assault.
However, after all these, compared to the statistics of other regions in the world, the harassment levels are less in the USA. For such a disgusting crime, all around the world measures are being taken and should be taken in even greater amounts to stop this. After all, each and everybody deserves their right of freedom.
